From the beginning, Al’s idea was for a place with no pretense, probably why he named it Al the Wops. The goal was to create an establishment for the working man, a place to “Come in, relax, and leave your worries outside.” From this many traditions were born.
In its almost 100 year history Al the Wop’s has become a destination for bikers, boaters and tourists from around the world. We pride ourselves on holding on to the values that Al established. It’s a place to leave your worries at the door, enjoy good drink and food, and experience the community of the California Delta with your friends.Al the Wop’s was constructed in 1915 by Lee Bing and three partners who ran a Chinese restaurant here in Locke, California. In 1934 Al Adami and an associate came up the river from Ryde to become the first non-Chinese business in town.Later Al purchased the building from Lee Bing and continued in the business until his death in 1961.

AL’s Place in San Francisco, a lauded vegetable-centric restaurant once named the best new restaurant in the country by Bon Appetit, is shutting down.
AL’s Place, a lauded vegetable-centric restaurant once named the best new restaurant in...This feeling, combined with potential job opportunities that would be more conducive to a work-life balance, like writing a cookbook or restaurant consulting, prompted his final decision to shut down AL’s Place.London, who previously cooked at Napa Valley’s pioneering vegetarian restaurant Ubuntu, opened AL’s Place in 2015 with an almost-manic focus on vegetables. Even dishes like french fries were taken to an extreme level (they’re brined for more than a week, much like kimchi, and then fried).Six months after opening, Bon Appetit named AL’s Place the new restaurant of the year, calling London’s flavors “revelatory.” The restaurant won a glowing review from former Chronicle restaurant critic Michael Bauer, a Michelin star and a spot on Chronicle critic Soleil Ho’s list of the best restaurants in San Fancisco.

When AL’s Place opened in the Mission in 2015, it quickly earned national accolades for its inventive focus on produce. While chef Aaron London’s Michelin-starred restaurant was never strictly vegetarian, it did put vegetables in the center of the plate, relegating meat to side dish status.
Yet, as AL’s Place has added more meat and fish, its popular family-style tasting menu — ordered by 65 percent of guests — has not caught up. That changed this month, when AL’s Place debuted a new omnivorous family-style tasting menu. Why the change? Apparently London felt like the set menu was no longer showcasing the best of what AL’s Place could do — and now it can also accommodate groups who want meat but don’t want to order a la carte. But as the years have gone by, AL’s Place has widened its viewpoint — much of the menu is still vegetable-focused, but there’s far more animal proteins on the menu than ever before.AL's Place Dinner Menu by Janelle Bitker on Scribd
Chef Aaron London is pulling the plug on his much lauded, vegetable-focused restaurant AL's Place in order to focus more on his young family, despite the restaurant still being packed every night. The last night of service will be Sunday, August 28.
Gushing over dishes like pickle-brined french fries and green pea curry with black cod, critic Andrew Knowlton wrote, "What deal with the culinary devil had chef Aaron London made in exchange for being able to produce such off-the-charts, flavor-rich creations?... It’s a restaurant so personal and passionate and satisfying that it was easy to name AL’s Place this year’s best new restaurant in America."His career to date and reputation mean that landing lucrative, less-demanding gigs will be fairly easy. And he tells the Chronicle that he's ready to write the cookbook he hasn't had time for while running AL's Place, maybe do some consulting, and maybe eventually land another restaurant job either here or elsewhere in the country.Shortly after it opened in early 2015, AL's Place won the coveted honor of being named Bon Appetit's best new restaurant in the country. In 2015, speaking to Vice, London called AL's Place "my baby," saying, "I love it so much... It feels like and smells like and looks like what I want it to...

Among the new tenants about to open are Tradehome Shoes and Lovisa jewelry store, both national brands that are familiar with CBL’s properties, Parkway Place Marketing Director Amanda Homelvig told AL.com. Homelvig said she’s been frequently asked when restaurant Parkway Hibachi Buffet will open.As with most retail centers, Parkway Place sees its traffic pick up with the holiday shopping season, starting with Black Friday and running through New Year’s. “The second busiest season for us will be back-to-school,” Homelvig said. “We’ll run a property-wide campaign for back-to-school. We’re working on it really diligently. We’re launching July 1st. Kids in Alabama only get eight to nine weeks off.Keating and Homelvig said the nostalgia factor of older generations wanting that step back in time can’t be dismissed as a factor in the resurgence of malls like Parkway Place. And Parkway Place’s allure includes traditional anchor stores Belk and Dillard’s on opposite ends of the complex. There’s just a diversity of things to do. Of course, everyone loves a sale. Everyone loves to buy a little happy. I feel like we do have something for everyone, all ages, no matter where you come from.” · Murals by Sonya R. The bright, airy indoor atmosphere and outdoor patio work hard to accommodate London’s acolytes but you’re likely still to find a long wait time without advanced reservations. It’s only when you start asking questions, as I did while spending the day at this vegetable-focused spot back in May, that you realize just how special AL’s Place is. To understand the restaurant and its cooking is to understand Aaron London himself—his troubled early life, his professional ups and downs, and what inspires him now.Think of the place as a window into the slightly manic and fully obsessive mind of an extremely talented and driven chef. It’s a restaurant so personal and passionate and satisfying that it was easy to name AL’s Place this year’s best new restaurant in America. He did almost everything himself, from designing the crab logo on the door to putting tape on the floor so the contractors would know where to install each wall, outlet, and piece of kitchen equipment. No detail was left to chance. On February 4, 2015, a crazy-quick two months later, AL’s Place—note the capital A and L for the chef’s initials—opened. His personal story might not matter to you either as you down the most intensely flavored, creative food you’ll taste all year. But know this: The most important ingredient at AL’s Place isn’t any of the meticulously curated produce or meat—it’s London himself.

It is located on the main street of Locke, a forgotten little town in the Sacramento Delta, originally built by and for Chinese Californians. Once famous as an anything-goes enclave of vice, Locke’s weathered wood-frame main street remains a magical sight; and in the middle of it is Al’s Place, thriving since 1934.Several years ago we heard from Patti Spezia, whose father was a good friend of Al Adami, the man who started the place. Patti wrote to say that Al’s place began because another member of the Adami family had been accused of bootlegging; but Al took the rap and served the jail time himself.Be sure to look upward in the bar room at the front of Al’s. The ceiling is plastered with dollar bills. If you wonder how they got there, ask the bartender. It will cost you a buck to find out, but it’s well worth it! ... This is a place in history that deserves to be visited by anyone in the area.We docked up the levee, across the street at the marina which I believe has burned. The children loved the peanut butter and jelly. My husband and I loved the hamburgers. This is a place that brings fond memories to mind. ... I haven’t been in Al’s since the mid 80s.
